21 Rare Wishlist Plants (for 2023)

wishlist plants

Okay, the past few years have clearly given us a heckuva wild ride. But, it has also tremendously grown the houseplant and rare plant communities.

That being said, plant prices have skyrocketed, especially in the rare plant world. (If you know, you know.)

Even with the increased plant prices, some of these beauties are just worth it. You know?

We’re going to be looking at 21 top wishlist plants going into 2021: what they look like, where to buy them, and how much they cost.

Commonly Known Wishlist Plants

We’re going to start off with a few commonly known plants, but may be a little harder to find than hitting up your local nursery.

Wishlist Plant 1: Calathea Orbifolia

So, here’s the thing. Calathea Orbifolias aren’t a very rare plant.

You may often find them in your local nurseries in 4″ or 6″ pots for about $20-$40.

But, you know what you can’t find?

You can’t find big, mature Orbifolias for sale. And, these babies get HUGE.

Therefore, with Orbifolias popping up more and more locally, I think having this huge, matured, round leaf plant will be more envied in 2021.

Where to find one:

Like I said, I can’t find any big mamas available to buy.

But, you could order this 6″ Orbifolia from Amazon.

Price:

When buying a 4-8″, you’ll probably spend between $18-$40.

Wishlist Plant 2: Pink Princess Philodendron (PPP)

The Pink Princess Philodendron has had a ton of hype behind it for a couple of years now.

I have a feeling this will be no different in 2021. So, clearly, she’s still qualifying as a wishlist plant.

Pushing out beautifully variegated and fully pink leaves, as you can see, these plants can be  absolute showstoppers.

**Don’t forget that philodendrons like to climb, so you’ll probably want to make a moss pole or get one like this.

Where to find one:

So, I haven’t seen these in any nurseries yet, but I have heard they are at some in Florida, (Dream state.)

Online, though, you have a few options:

Bros with Hoes

Gabriella Plants

Facebook Rare Plant Groups

(There are others, but these are the only two sites I have purchased from that have PPP. So, they’re the only ones I am comfortable recommending. But, I’m sure you can find some by Googling.)

Price:

Around $100 for full leaf cuttings and between hundreds to thousands of dollars for fully established plants.

Wishlist Plant 3: Monstera Albo

This is another one that’s already HECKA popular, and doesn’t seem to be dying out anytime soon.

The Monstera clan has so many different, yet all highly sought after plants. Of course, the Monstera Albo being a top one.

With their beautiful, white-variegated leaves, it sure is a stunner. I don’t think it will depart from being a top wishlist plant anytime soon.

But, it comes at a price.

Where to fine one:

I have seen these on Bros with Hoes, Ebay, Etsy. and FB Plant Groups.

Price:

Hahaha. Well, depends on the seller, size, and condition.

Some sellers like Plantasia will help you pick out the best cutting WITHIN your budget! (For a rough cutting, you’re still looking to spend >$80.)

But, I have seen (and purchased *cries*) really poor conditioned cuttings for over $150. I definitely don’t recommend it.

For a fully established, rooted, and well growing plant, you’ll look at spending anywhere between a few hundred to a few thousands.

Wishlist Plant 4: Monstera Thai Constellation

If you aren’t a huge fan of the Monstera Albos, but want some variegation, this may just be perfect for you.

The Monstera Thai Constellation shoots out gorgeously variegated leaves with cream colored speckles (constellation).

Grown in the same atmosphere as other monsteras, this wishlist plant is said to be slightly easier and less fussy than it’s Albo family member.

Where to find one:

Honestly, these have surprisingly been popping up in some local nurseries around me.

But, if you can’t find a brick-and-morter store that has them, I would order from reputable sellers in Facebook groups.

Price:

At our local nursery, a full, multiple leaf plant is going for $600.

For cuttings, I would estimate around $100 per node.

Wishlist Plant 5: Philodendron Micans

Like the Calathea Orbifolia, Philodendron Micans aren’t technically a rare plant. But, they do get tons of (well deserved) hype.

I wanted to include these because they are honestly just breathtaking.

The velvety leaves can be a range of burgundy, orange, deep yellow, and various shades of green.

These plants also change colors depending on how light hits them!

Where to find one:

A decent amount of nurseries carry them (or at least can get them in if requested).

But, you could also just snag this one for $20.

Price:

Between $15-$60 depending on pot size.

Rare Wishlist Plants

Wishlist Plant 6: Cercestis Mirabilis

These deserve all the clout. Period. The end.

wishlist plants

I don’t think this plant is a known as most of the other wishlist plants listed on this post.

I often have people asking what this is when I post a picture. That being said, once you see it, you want it. Right?!

Where to find one:

Well, first of all, you can checkout this post to find specific sites to order from.

Otherwise, I haven’t seen this plant in any other stores other than Prissylily.

Price:

At the beginning of the year, a small, one-leaf plant would go for about $90.

Now, you are looking to spend about $300 for the plant pictured.

With super cute heart shaped, veiny leaves, how could you not want one of these?

Budget for about $80-$200, depending on the size you want.

This is honestly one of my favorite plants listed here.

Due to its bright green foliage and beautiful fenestrations, the Monstera Pinnatipartita is an eye-catcher.

monstera pinnatipartita wishlist plants

I got this plant as a two leaf cutting at the beginning on 2020.

Clearly, even with all this year has brought, she has thrived!

I have seen a lot more interest in these within the last few months. Therefore, I definitely think it’s going to be a top wishlist plant in 2021.

Where to find one:

Honestly, Facebook groups. I haven’t seen these in nurseries. Although, I think Botanicarus *sometimes* has them.

Price:

Between $80-$200.

Wishlist Plant 9: Gloriosum

Ah, the Gloriosum.

Do you even need any more information after seeing this picture?

I don’t know why, but I just have a strong attachment to these. They grow up as a climbing philodendron with impeccable details on the leaves.

Where to find one:

I haven’t seen these in nurseries, but check Etsy and Facebook groups.

These are not cheap. *sweats*

Plan to spend around $100 for an unrooted cutting.

Wishlist Plant 11: Glorious

The Glorious is actually of hybrid. Its the Gloriosum x Melanochrysum.

The leaves grow in more of a heart shape, while still keeping the chalky white veining.

Where to find one:

I *think* Prissylily had a few while I was there, but you can also look on Botanicarus. (Also, as usual… Facebook groups.)

Price:

Anywhere from $100 and up.

Wishlist Plant 12: Philodendron Verrucosum

philo verru wishlist plants

This wishlist plant is the epitome of urban jungle vibes.

With its red on green veining and fuzzy petioles, the Verrucosum is so fun to watch grow.

As it climbs (use a moss pole like this for support), the leaves will also get bigger and bigger!

Where to find one:

Facebook groups!

Price:

It kind of just depends on where you buy from. Plan to spend around $100-$300, depending on how many leaves you are wanting.

Wishlist Plant 13: Philodendron Melanochrysum

The Melanochrysum is not a super rare plant anymore, but it sure is a staple for your plant collection.

As you can see in the picture, these babies can start off pretty small and still grow into huge mamas.

(Remember, since this is a climbing plant, you will want some kind of climbing support.)

Where to find one:

I know Prissylily had a few and Botanicarus has some listed.

Price:

About $60ish for a cutting and $150+ for an established plant.

Wishlist Plant 14: Philodendron Splendid (Melanochrysum x Verrucosum)

Okay, this is one of the prettiest plants I’ve seen.

Its another hybrid of two previous wishlist plants listed, though.

The Splendid is a Melanochrysum x Verrucosum hybrid.

The contrast between the dark green leaves and bright yellow veins is literally just like artwork.

Where to find one:

Facebook groups. I haven’t seen them on sites or in nurseries.

Price:

I’m not sure, to be honest. But, for reference, I bought a one leaf, unrooted cutting for $65 (I think) from a local plant guru.

Wishlist Plant 15: Moonlight Treubii

wishlist plants

The leaves on the Moonlight Trebuii are so thick and luscious, you need it.

I have a cutting I’m rooting, but I will say she seems to be a pretty slow grower.

But, when you see full plants like that picture, it truly shows to beauties they can become.

Where to find one:

A local nursery just got some of these in, surprisingly. So, I would call around and see if you have any close to you.

If not, checkout Facebook groups and Etsy.

Price:

I paid $35 for my cutting.

Wishlist Plant 16: Philodendron Mamei

Reminding me of a lot of similar jungle-y philodendrons, the Mamei has fairly distinctive leaves.

Growing as another climber, this wishlist plant can also produce pretty huge leaves as it matures, turning into more of a solid green plant.

Where to find one:

Botanicarus

Price:

Between $60- $300.

Wishlist Plant 17: Warocqueanum

I am praying I own one of these beauties one day. If I do, I promise to do a personal care post!

The Warocqueanum (Queen) is all the rage right now.

Although they are finicky plants, if you’re up for the challenge, they’re taking a strong lead as the top trending wishlist plant going into 2021.

Where to find one:

Facebook groups, Etsy, and Ebay

Price:

Oof. Anywhere from $100 and up. The sky is basically the limit here.

Wishlist Plant 18: El Choco Red

Oh, finally. This gorgeous gal.

The El Choco Red has absolutely blown up over the last 6 months.

At the beginning of this year, it wasn’t really talked about.

Now, you see them all over Facebook plant groups and Instagrams.  And, I mean, it’s obvious why.

With their show stopping red underneaths and velvety green leaves, you gotta love it.

Where to find one:

Etsy, Ebay, Facebook groups, and Botanicarus

Price:

Roughly $150 for a chonk, $200 for a cutting, and $400+ for a plant.

Hard to Find Wishlist Plants

Wishlist Plant 19: Anthurium Ace-of-Spades

I just stalk these on Instagram, to be honest.

But the dark leaves are just… witchy and magic and I love it.

This is a plant that has just recently became VERY popular throughout rare plant Facebook groups. So, I am very confident that it will stay a wishlist plant for awhile.

Price: $$$$

Wishlist Plant 20: Caramel Marble

Okay, I’m going to be honest with this one. I’m not super drawn to it.

But, the variegation is very pretty.

And it is a highly sought after (and outrageously expensive) plant right now. Since not many people have their hands on one, they’re going to be the absolute craze for 2021.

Price: $$$$

Wishlist Plant 21: Anadendrum Affine

And, last, but abso-freaking-lutely not least… the Anadendrum Affine.

I can’t find it for sell anywhere. But, by golly, I’ll keep trying.

wishlist plant

I really don’t think this is a super ‘known’ plant, yet. But, it sure is a looker.

Although it looks similar to a El Salvador Siltepecana, its of no relation. (That I can accurately find.)

Speaking of, I can’t find much information about these. But, people are starting to ask for them.

Making them a top wishlist plant that you need to add to your collection.

Wishlist Plant Overview

Overall, it’s up to you to make your own wishlist plant outline!

But, I hope this helped you get it started (or make additions).

There will certainly be more popular plants, but I plan on updating this post regularly. Yearly, at the very minimum.

If you know of other places to get some of these plants, drop them in the comments below or shoot me an email. That way, I can add them in.

Frequently Asked Questions-

Q: What makes these plants “wishlist plants”?

After regularly looking online, through Facebook groups, and Instagram feeds, I put together what I deem the top trending wishlist plants for 2021.

Although there were no real requirements, these are the plants that are currently (or becoming) highly sought after.

Q: Are these plants pet safe?

Most of them aren’t, no. So, put them out of reach for your pet babies.

They do, however, thrive in greenhouses. Add one for decor and keep your pets safe, too!

Q: How do I care for these plants?

They all have different care requirements. I will update this post as I put out care guidelines for each plant.

Signing off,

xoxo.
